Freshman year is a paradigm shift year and the transition from grammar school to high school can be challenging, frightening and invigorating. S.O.A.R. understands this and spends the year getting your student “On Track,” to graduate in four years by knowing their way around, who their resources are, what is expected of them, how to self advocate, what they have to look forward to and how to get involved in the Taft Community; paving the way for a healthy high school career and independence beyond. Freshman S.O.A.R. utilizes Sean Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, S.O.A.R. students move on to sophomore year with goals, a plan to achieve those goals, and an executive functioning system that maintains their organization, class readiness and how to use time efficiently, making the most of their academic days. Furthermore, they will understand how to analyze grades, the impact of missing work, how to prevent it as well as knowing the right questions to ask and how to study with minimal teacher prompts. They will be on track with obtaining their Freshman Service Learning project hours through use of class time and will have received many lessons involving collaborative skill enrichment as well as student centered supplemental reading, critical thinking, comprehending, writing and social emotional skills. Most importantly S.O.A.R. aims to keep students motivated and the love of learning alive by focusing on their strengths and introducing resources that can assist with their challenges and well as teaching lessons that reinforce vital skills such as using graphic organizers, writing basics, reading comprehension and critical thinking. The school year’s four quarters are broken into the following topics concentrating on multiple intelligence and student needs.
Quarter 1: Where do I begin? Introduction to High School; the skills you need to succeed.
Quarter 2: The Development of Me; Character Development.
Quarter 3: Decision Making, Writing Skills and Service Learning Completion.
Quarter 4: Self Initiating, Post Secondary (College) Research and Test Taking Skills.
